EOSDIS New Datasets: March 2018

ASDC

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) Project and the Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) announce the release of new versions of the MISR Level 2 (L2) Aerosol Product, the MISR L2 Land Surface Product, and the L3 Component Global Aerosol and Land Surface Products.

GES DISC

NASA's Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) released the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) dataset GLDAS Version 2.0 (GLDAS-2.0) Daily Data from the Catchment Land Surface Model (“Catchment-LSM”). This new product has two components. One component is forced entirely with the Global Meteorological Forcing Dataset (hereafter, GLDAS-2.0). The other component is forced with a combination of model- and observation-based forcing datasets (hereafter, GLDAS-2.1). GLDAS-2.0 from Catchment-LSM contains 33 variables (forcing and model outputs) at 0.25º spatial resolution, covering the period from January 1, 1948 to December 30, 2014.

GHRC DAAC

NASA's Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) published the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) NOAA X-band Polarimetric Radar (NOXP) Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) dataset. This dataset consists of differential reflectivity, differential phase shift, co-polar cross correlation, radial Doppler velocity, reflectivity, and other radar parameters, collected by NOXP mobile radar during the GPM IPHEx field campaign. The IPHEx field campaign occurred in the Southern Appalachians, spanning into the Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions of North Carolina during April 21, 2014 through June 15, 2014. The NOXP radar, operated by the NOAA National Severe Storm Laboratory (NSSL), was positioned in the Pigeon River basin of the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. NOXP data are available in netCDF-3 format. The dataset includes weather condition photos taken at the NOXP radar location.

GHRC DAAC has published all four of the GPM Ground Validation NEXRAD Level III Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) datasets. The purpose of the IFloodS campaign was to help support the ground validation of the GPM. NEXRAD Level-II data were previously published in 2017. This dataset, consisting of two Level-III NEXRAD precipitation products, were gathered from Unidata for four NEXRAD stations in the vicinity of the IFloodS campaign during March 29, 2013 through June 18, 2013. These datasets contain digital instantaneous precipitation rate (DPR) and storm total accumulation estimates (DTA) in NIDS binary format files. GHRC DAAC published the GPM Ground Validation Campaign Reports Olympic Mountains Experiment (OLYMPEX) dataset. This dataset consists of flight reports, weather forecasts, instrument reports, scientist summaries, and plan-of-day reports collected during the GPM OLYMPEX field campaign that occurred during the intense operating period of November 2015 to February 2016. OLYMPEX field campaign measurements support validation and refinement of GPM satellite measurements and algorithms. Some files are located within tarred files containing reports, plots and photos.

GHRC DAAC published the GPM Ground Validation National Mosaic and Multi-Sensor QPE (NMQ) System IPHEx dataset. This dataset consists of six different data products: precipitation rate, hourly rainfall accumulation, daily rainfall accumulation, hybrid scan reflectivity, three-dimensional reflectivity, and vertically integrated liquid content estimates. These data products were created using the NOAA NMQ System which ingests Weather Surveillance Radar 88 Doppler (WSR-88D) radar data, Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) model analysis fields, and Hydrometeorological Automated Data Systems (HADS) gauge data. The files provided in this dataset are from system output during the GPM IPHEx field campaign that occurred in the Southern Appalachians, spanning into the Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions of North Carolina. These data are available in ASCII and netCDF-4 formats for dates between April 30 and June 16, 2014.

GHRC DAAC recently published the GPM Ground Validation CAX1 Radar CFradial format Olympic Mountains Experiment (OLYMPEX) dataset. This dataset was collected by the dual polarization X-band “CAX1” portable scanning radar during the GPM Ground Validation OLYMPEX field campaign that took place in the Pacific Northwest during November 2015 through April 2016. The dataset consists of radar parameters such as radar reflectivity, Doppler velocity, Doppler width, differential reflectivity, and signal quality indices provided at a 0.4 to 1.0 km spatial resolution. The CAX1 radar was operated by Environment and Climate Change Canada and located at the southern tip of Vancouver Island on the Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt Albert Head (AHD) military training area. The data files are available in Cfradial netCDF-4 format.

GHRC DAAC has published the GPM Ground Validation IFC NEXRAD Composite IFloodS dataset. This dataset contains rain rate estimates derived using NEXRAD radars in operation during the IFloodS field campaign carried out to support GPM ground validation. NEXRAD is a network of 160 stationary S-Band radars dispersed throughout the United States and select locations abroad. Data from NEXRAD radars within and near the IFloodS Iowa study region were gathered during April 19, 2013 through June 30, 2013 to create this subset for IFloodS support. The NEXRAD Composite data files are available in netCDF-4 or ASCII format with associated reflectivity browse imagery available in GIF format.

NSIDC DAAC

NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) has published data through the end of 2017 for the dataset Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) Daily Snow Depth Analysis Data.

NSIDC DAAC has published new 2017 to three Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Greenland Ice Sheet Velocity datasets.

NSIDC DAAC would like to announce a change to data access for the MEaSUREs Annual Antarctic Ice Velocity Maps 2005-2017, Version 1. Data access is now solely through our primary archive at: https://n5eil01u.ecs.nsidc.org/MEASURES/NSIDC-0720.001/. File level spatial and temporal metadata have been added to aid in searching and ordering the data through Earthdata Search.

NSIDC DAAC has published data through 29 November 2017 to the dataset IceBridge POS/AV L1B Corrected Position and Attitude Data, Version 1.

NSIDC DAAC has published data through 25 July 2017 to the dataset IceBridge ATM L1B Elevation and Return Strength, Version 2.

NSIDC DAAC has published data through 25 July 2017 for the dataset IceBridge Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) L2 Icessn Elevation, Slope, and Roughness, Version 2.

VIIRS swath data customization options are now available at NSIDC DAAC. VIIRS 6-minute swath (VNP10, VNP29, and VNP30) datasets use algorithms specifically designed to be compatible with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra and Aqua Version 6 datasets. In addition, data customization options for VIIRS are similar to MODIS and include subsetting, reformatting, and reprojection. These options are provided by NASA Earthdata Search or can also be accessed programmatically.

NSIDC DAAC has published Version 2 of the MEaSUREs MODIS Mosaic of Greenland (MOG) 2005, 2010, and 2015 Image Maps dataset. Version 2 includes Mosaic of Greenland 2010 and 2015 (MOG2010 and MOG2015) data, in addition to the MOG2005 data.

NSIDC DAAC has published field data from the Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiment 2015 (SMAPVEX15) validation campaign. The new dataset contains in-situ gravimetric and volumetric soil moisture, bulk density, and soil temperature measurements. Visit the product page for details.

NSIDC DAAC has published the Snow Experiment 2017 (SnowEx17) Cloud Absorption Radiometer BRDF, Version 1 dataset. This dataset contains measurements of the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) at two locations in Colorado - Grand Mesa, a snow-covered, forested study site about 40 miles east of Grand Junction, and Senator Beck Basin approximately 80 miles to the SSE of Grand Mesa. These data were obtained during the NASA SnowEx 2017 campaign using the Cloud Absorption Radiometer, an airborne multi-angular, multi-wavelength scanning radiometer that measures scattered light in 14 spectral bands.

NSIDC DAAC has published data from January 2018 for the MEaSUREs Greenland Image Mosaics from Sentinel-1A and 1B, Version 2 dataset.

ORNL DAAC

NASA's Oak Ridge National Laboratory DAAC (ORNL DAAC) published the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) dataset ABoVE: Gridded 30-m Above ground Biomass, Shrub Dominance, North Slope, AK, 2007-2016. This dataset includes 30-m gridded estimates of total plant above ground biomass (AGB), the shrub AGB, and the shrub dominance (shrub/plant AGB) for non-water portions of the Beaufort Coastal Plain and Brooks Foothills ecoregions of the North Slope of Alaska. The estimates were derived by linking biomass harvests from 28 published field site datasets with NDVI from a regional Landsat mosaic derived from Landsat 5 and 7 satellite imagery. The data cover the period 2007-06-01 to 2016-08-31.

ORNL DAAC published the Vegetation Collection dataset Tree Inventory and Biometry Measurements, Tapajos National Forest, Para, Brazil, 2010. This dataset provides tree inventory, tree height, diameter at breast height (DBH), and estimated crown measurements from 30 plots located in the Tapajos National Forest, Para, Brazil collected in September 2010. The plots were located in primary forest, primary forest subject to reduced-impact selective logging (PFL) between 1999 and 2003, and secondary forest (SF) with different age and disturbance histories. Plots were centered on GLAS (the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System) lidar instrument footprints selected along two sensor acquisition tracks spanning a wide range in vertical structure and aboveground biomass.

ORNL DAAC published the following dataset in its Spatial Data Access Tool (SDAT): ABoVE: Gridded 30-m Aboveground Biomass, Shrub Dominance, North Slope, AK, 2007-2016 (see https://webmap.ornl.gov/ogc/dataset.jsp?ds_id=1565).

ORNL DAAC published the Vegetation Collection dataset Forest Inventories at Burned and Unburned Tropical Forest Sites, Acre, Brazil, 2014. This dataset provides measurements for diameter at breast height (DBH) and species identification of trees for inventories taken at five tropical forest sites in Acre state, Brazil, in the southwestern Amazon region. The sites included one in a forest reserve (Reserva Bonal) and four within forest fragments situated on private property. The inventory sites included forests burned in 2005 and 2010 and also unburned forests. Surveys were conducted in July and August 2014.

ORNL DAAC published the Soil Collection dataset Global Hydrologic Soil Groups (HYSOGs250m) for Curve Number-Based Runoff Modeling. This dataset represents a globally consistent, gridded dataset of hydrologic soil groups (HSGs) with a geographical resolution of 1/480 decimal degrees, corresponding to a projected resolution of approximately 250-m.

PO.DAAC

NASA's Physical Oceanography DAAC (PO.DAAC) released the PI-produced JPL V4.0 SMAP Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) and extreme winds data on February 22, 2018. This release includes Level-2B and Level 3 products based on the JPL Combined Active-Passive (CAP) algorithm applied to data from NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) observatory. PO.DAAC Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) PI-produced JPL Level 3 monthly and 8-day mapped Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) product, based on the Combined Active-Passive (CAP) retrieval algorithm, was operationally re-ingested after the Data Provider corrected a metadata issue associated with fill values.

SEDAC

NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) completed release of two datasets based on the Global Fire Emissions Data v.4 (GFED4) on 23 February, the Global Fire Emissions Indicators, Country-Level Tabular Data, v1 (1997-2015) and the Global Fire Emissions Indicators, Grids, v1 (1997-2015). The Country-Level Tabular Data summarize the data by country and by year, whereas the grids provide the data in GeoTIFF as an alternative to the NetCDF5. The data are derived from Global Fire Emissions Database version 4 (GFED4), which is a modeled product based on burned area data from the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Visible and Infrared Scanner (VIRS) (pre-2001) and MODIS sensors (post-2001).

On 12 March, SEDAC completed a beta release of the India Village-Level Geospatial Socio-Economic Data Set: 1991, 2001, a compilation of the finest level of administrative boundaries in India (village/town-level) and over 200 socio-economic variables collected during the Indian Census in 1991 and 2001. This dataset was developed by digitizing village/town level boundaries from the official analog maps published by the Survey of India for 2001. This dataset also utilized tabular data for 1991 and 2001 from the Primary Census Abstract (PCA) and Village Directory (VD) data series of the Indian census. The data are in Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) 44N projection and are distributed primarily as shapefiles. Separate files are provided for each of the 28 states (number of states during 1991 and 2001 census) and combined Union Territories for 1991 and 2001.
