Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR)

The Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) is one of the prime instruments aboard the joint NASA/Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory, and consists of a Ku-band precipitation radar (KuPR) and a Ka-band precipitation radar (KaPR). The KuPR is an updated version of the Precipitation Radar that flew aboard NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and provides greater sensitivity in measuring light rainfall and snowfall in mid-latitude regions. The KuPR and KaPR instruments comprising the DPR provide rain sensing over both land and ocean, day and night.
