ASDC released a new field campaign data for the Deriving Information on Surface conditions from Column and VERtically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality (DISCOVER-AQ) California. This is for public use with the Toolsets for Airborne Data (TAD) web application (see https://tad.larc.nasa.gov/login.php).

GES DISC / Suomi NPP OMPS

The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Limb Profiler (LP) Science Team and NASA's Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) released the Version 1 AER675 aerosol profile data product from NASA's OMPS LP instrument on the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi NPP satellite. This product consists of daily files containing individual aerosol extinction coefficient profiles retrieved at 675 nm (10-40 km altitude range). Cloud height detection information is also reported for each profile for the altitude range 5-35 km. Regular OMPS LP measurements began in April 2012 and continue to the present. See OMPS LP Data News for additional information on these data including dataset documentation and access to the data.

Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS)

NASA GIBS announced the availability of 80+ new layers in GIBS. This includes Advanced Microwave Sounding Radiometer-2 (AMSR2) sea ice products, an initial batch of Web Enabled Landsat Data (WELD) products, and a complete archive of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) atmospheric products from the start of the Terra (2000) and Aqua (2002) missions through the present. The team members added 20+ of the layers mentioned above in Worldview and are in the process of adding the rest. The team also added several new features including the ability to view natural events, animate imagery over time, and rotate polar views. Read more in the GIBS blog.

GIBS also released daily nighttime imagery via the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band layer. This layer shows patterns of human activity and energy behaviors such as cities and highways, the holiday periods, the tracking of shipping and fishing fleets at night, and the burning of waste natural gas (gas flares) from on and off shore oil/gas production sites. Read more in the GIBS blog.

LP DAAC

NASA's Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) released two Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Global Food Security Analysis and Support Data (GFSAD) one-kilometer (km) products on February 9. The products comprise a global record representing Crop Dominance and Crop Mask classifications for the nominal year 2010. The GFSAD 1-km products were created using multiple input data including Landsat, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), Satellite Probatoire d'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) vegetation, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), secondary elevation data, climate 50-year precipitation and 20-year temperature data, reference sub-meter to 5-meter resolution ground data, and country statistical data. NSIDC DAAC also announced that, due to a problem with the Antenna Azimuth file used to process the half-orbit 01966_A, the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Science Data Systems (SDS) team has replaced the following files:

  • SMAP_L1B_TB_01966_A_20150614T231537_R14010_001.h5 (Regenerated 2017-02-11)
  • SMAP_L1C_TB_01966_A_20150614T231537_R14010_001.h5 (Regenerated 2017-02-14)
  • SMAP_L1C_TB_E_01966_A_20150614T231537_R14010_001.h5 (Regenerated 2017-02-14)
  • SMAP_L2_SM_P_E_01966_A_20150614T231537_R14010_001.h5 (Regenerated 2017-02-14)

SMAP SDS has corrected the Antenna Azimuth file and regenerated these half-orbits. Users are advised to download the replacement data files soon.

The Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS), a web-based data extraction and visualization tool, can now be used to explore Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover datasets. Point samples can be ordered in AppEEARS by submitting a list of geographic coordinates for the desired location(s). The complete collections of MOD10A1, MYD10A1, MOD10A2, and MYD10A2 are available for extraction in AppEEARS, providing over 16 years’ worth of snow cover data.

The MEaSUREs Greenland Ice Mapping Project (GIMP) Land Ice and Ocean Classification Mask dataset is now available at NSIDC DAAC. This dataset, part of the Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, provides a complete land ice and ocean classification mask for the Greenland ice sheet that was mapped using a combination of Landsat 7 ETM+ panchromatic band imagery, and RADARSAT-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) amplitude images

The Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC) Daily Snow Depth Analysis Data dataset at NSIDC DAAC has been updated with snow depth analysis data for 2016

Due to a problem involving the atmospheric correction algorithm used to process SMAP Level-1B (L1B) brightness temperatures, some half-orbit data files contain invalid brightness temperature values. The errors occur infrequently, about one-half orbit per month, and affected files have been removed from the following datasets:

The SMAP SDS team is working to correct the issue in forward processing. Until that time, files will continue to be affected with a frequency of approximately one-half orbit per month. NSIDC DAAC will continue to identify and remove all affected files. Files currently affected are documented in a missing files spreadsheet, which will be updated and posted to the following How-To article approximately once per month.

SMAP SDS has corrected the Antenna Azimuth file and regenerated these half-orbits. Users are advised to download the replacement data files soon.
