Iceberg A23A Sheds a Piece

Icebergs A23A and A23C are seen below South Georgia Island, Antarctica, in this true-color corrected reflectance image from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-21 platform on May 3, 2025. Iceberg A23A, which grounded in early March, is the rectangular feature in the center of the image. Iceberg A23C, which broke off in mid-April, can be seen on the right side of the image.

This before-and-after comparison shows Iceberg A23C breaking off Iceberg A23A between April 11 and April 12. Iceberg A23C is almost 20km in length and 8km in width. Swipe the center bar left and right to see iceberg A23C break off A23A.
