Celebrate GIS Day 2021

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide powerful capabilities for visualizing, analyzing, and interacting with Earth science data.

November 17 is GIS Day 2021, an annual event celebrating the technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). First celebrated in 1999, GIS Day is your opportunity to learn more about GIS and how scientists are using this powerful tool to explore our world.

GIS is a collection of computer-based tools for organizing information from a variety of data sources to map and examine changes on Earth, and is designed to capture, store, manage, analyze, and visualize all types of geographical data. NASA uses GIS to aid in managing, understanding, and sharing Earth observations, and GIS provides powerful capabilities for working with geospatial data from multiple sources, including satellite imagery, Global Positioning System (GPS) recordings, and textual attributes associated with a particular space. GIS is also used to build applications that enable tools and services in user-friendly interfaces.

As you celebrate GIS Day 2021, take time to view the StoryMap on how NASA uses GIS and explore our Earthdata GIS page. The video below provides a great overview of the many ways GIS is used with NASA Earth observation data to help enable open science:
