Background

Global Positioning System-Radio Occultation (GPS-RO) data were evaluated by NASA’s Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) program and were found to provide value in a number of areas including data assimilation and numerical weather prediction. They also enhanced atmospheric temperature and moisture content vertical profiles when combined with hyperspectral sounder information. Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) agencies requested access to GPS-RO data to further explore the value of GPS-RO data to meet their needs.

Status

NASA's CSDA continues to provide access to Global Navigation Satellite System-Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) data through the current United States (U.S.) Government End User License Agreement (EULA). The license provides scientific, non-commercial use only with a 48-day delay for access to the Spire data.

Societal Impact

Insights on atmospheric dynamics, such as thermodynamic vertical profile of the atmosphere, is critical for needs such as predicting severe weather and providing atmospheric stability parameters to forecasters and to regional and mesoscale numerical weather prediction models.

NASA CSDA Program Vendor Focus - Spire
NASA's Earth Science Division (ESD) established the Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) program to explore the potential of commercial satellite data in advancing the agency's Earth science research and application objectives. The program aims to identify, assess, and acquire data from commercial providers, which may offer a cost-effective means of supplementing Earth observations collected by NASA, other U.S. Government agencies, and international collaborators.

During this NASA CSDA program vendor webinar, NASA speakers will introduce the CSDA program, and speakers from Spire will introduce the company's constellations of Earth observation satellites; show participants how to discover, access, and work with these data; and speak to how these data products complement NASA Earth science data holdings for research and applications. Additional topics will focus on services available to data users and getting assistance with the NASA CSDA program's Spire datasets, services, and tools.
