The Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has released the Mid-Atlantic Lightning Mapping Array (MALMA) Version 1 dataset. MALMA provides three-dimensional lightning observations collected from a combined network of the Washington, D.C. Lightning Mapping Array (DCLMA) and the Wallops Flight Facility Lightning Mapping Array (WFFLMA).

The dataset supports validation of the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) aboard the International Space Station and the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on NOAA satellites, while also enabling convective storm research and evaluation of lightning prediction models. These observations help researchers assess lightning detection performance and improve understanding of storm electrification processes.

This release bridges previously available DCLMA and WFFLMA network records by providing a unified Mid-Atlantic lightning mapping product, creating a consolidated resource for ongoing lightning validation and atmospheric science applications.
