NASA's Level-1 and Atmosphere Archive and Distribution System Distributed Active Archive Center (LAADS DAAC) has released a near real-time (NRT) Joint Polar Satellite System-2 (JPSS-2/NOAA-21) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) nighttime lights product. This is a gap-filled lunar bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF)-adjusted global daily nighttime lights product
The product provides estimates of nighttime light emissions around the globe by capturing visible and near-infrared observations under low-light conditions. It isolates true surface lights by filtering out moonlight and uses gap-filling to overcome cloud cover, ensuring a continuous daily view of Earth at night. Nighttime Lights data can illuminate global patterns in urban expansion, energy usage, and economic activity. NRT estimates of this product are also critical for time-sensitive applications, like tracking power outages after severe storms.
