NASA’s Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) released the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Clear-Sky Processor for Ocean (ACSPO) L2P/L3U v2.80 SST datasets from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument onboard the Joint Polar Satellite System 2 (JPSS-2 or J2) satellite, renamed as NOAA-21 (N21).

The newly added N21 datasets complement existing datasets from NPP, doi:10.5067/GHVRS-2PO28 and doi:10.5067/GHVRS-3UO28 , and N20 doi:10.5067/GHV20-2PO28 , doi:10.5067/GHV20-3UO28 . All are produced with the NOAA Advanced Clear Sky Processor for Ocean (ACSPO) Sea Surface Temperature (SST) system V2.80. The datasets are formatted in netCDF-4, compliant with the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) Data Processing Specification v2.0 (GDS2). Detailed information regarding the GHRSST L2P/L3U products are available from the GHRSST website and data is available in the Earthdata catalog.

The L2P datasets are reported in the instrument native swath projection with 0.75 km (nadir) to 1.5 km (swath edge) spatial resolution, and organized into 10-min granules, 144 per day with a daily data volume of 7 GB/day. The L3U datasets represent a gridded (at 0.02-deg equal-angle projection) version of L2P, also consisting of 144 10-min granules per day, with a daily volume of 0.5 GB/day.

The ACSPO VIIRS datasets are available back to 1 Feb 2012 (NPP), 5 Jan 2018 (N20), and 19 Mar 2023 (N21). As of this notice, all ACSPO VIIRS datasets remain active and accurate, and are updated daily with several hours latency. The near-real time (NRT) data are replaced by delayed-mode (DM) with approximately 2-month latency, based on a more complete L1b input and improved ancillary data.

The datasets are described and discoverable via the dataset landing pages. We recommend that users download the data with the data-subscriber tool.
