The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Global Positioning System (GPS) recovery was successfully carried out at 17:42:00 UTC on July 16, 2024. Restoration of the geolocation accuracy has been confirmed and normal production of all Suomi NPP Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 1 and Version 2 data products has resumed, starting with July 16, 2024. Data gaps will exist from 21:42:00 UTC on July 9, 2024, through 17:42:00 UTC on July 16, 2024, due to unrecoverable geolocation errors and invalid timestamps.

For any additional questions about data access or the VIIRS collections, please contact LP DAAC User Services.

Jul 16, 2024

Similar to the May 25, 2024, event, the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) mission experienced another Global Positioning System (GPS) anomaly that started at 21:46:00 UTC on July 9, 2024 . This anomaly caused significant degradation in geolocation performance for Suomi NPP VIIRS data. Forward processing has been suspended for Suomi NPP VIIRS data products. Version 1 Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF)/Albedo and all version 2 data products are impacted, as well as other data products that rely on Suomi NPP VIIRS data as inputs. An update will be posted once the issue has been resolved.
