The Suomi NPP GPS recovery was successfully carried out on June 3, 2024. Restoration of the geolocation accuracy has been confirmed and normal production of all Suomi NPP VIIRS Version 1 and Version 2 data products has resumed, starting with June 5. Data gaps may persist from May 25 through June 5, 2024, as reprocessing of data continues.

An anomaly with the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Global Positioning System (GPS), which started at approximately 22:23:14 UTC on May 25, 2024, is causing significant degradation in geolocation performance for Suomi NPP Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data. The geolocation errors have been found to exceed 1 km. Given this degradation, all production of SNPP VIIRS Level-2 and higher-level data products are being suspended until further notice. Users are advised not to use any SNPP VIIRS data products that have been produced and distributed since May 25, 2024.

The LP DAAC will release another announcement when a resolution has been determined.
