In late 2026/early 2027, the Terra and Aqua platforms that carry the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument will begin shutting down operations. As part of this process, MODIS data will no longer be collected, and the final reprocessing of MODIS data will take place. Both platforms are currently drifting out of their designed orbits, impacting crossing times and possibly impacting data.
As changes to MODIS data continues to occur in preparation for the discontinuation of Terra and Aqua, data users are encouraged to explore using similar data products from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). Visit the NASA's Level 1 and Atmosphere Archive and Distribution System Distributed Active Archive Center (LAADS DAAC) website for information about the MODIS decommissioning plan and efforts to provide continuity between the MODIS and VIIRS atmospheric data records.
Learn more about how VIIRS will help ensure continuity of Earth observations after MODIS is retired.
