A Memorandum of Understanding was made and entered into between the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and NASA to place the active short- and long-term archives for experimental land remotely sensed data obtained by NASA at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. After an agreed upon period of time the responsibility of the archives are to be transferred from NASA to USGS.
Effective Oct. 1, 2003, NASA will transition their complete Version 0 datasets (e.g. data, metadata, browse, and documentation) to USGS. This will be done via the transfer of media from NASA to USGS.
USGS will make the data available to the public according to its current standard of pricing and service. Each dataset will remain available on NASA's EOS Data Gateway (EDG) and/or the Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Centers (LP DAAC) archive for minimal impact to the user community.
The following datasets are included in this transition:
- GLCC (Global Land Cover Characterization)
- GTOPO30 (Global 30 Arc-Second Elevation Data Set)
- Hydro 1k (Hydrological 1K Elevation Derivative Database)
- NALC (North American Landscape Characterization)
- NLDC (NASA Landsat Data Collection)
- CEES (Committee on Environment and Natural Resources Research)
- HTFP (Humid Tropical Forest Project)
- GCLDC (Global Change Land Data Collection)
- AVHRR Global 10 day Composites (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer)
- AVHRR Global NDVI CD June 1992 (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer)
- AVHRR Orbital Segments (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer)
- GLCTS (Global Land Cover Test Sites)
- Aircraft Scanners ASAS (Advanced Solid-state Array Spectroradiometer)
- MASTER (MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator)
