NASA's Land, Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for Earth observation (LANCE) has released the Beta 1 near real-time (NRT) global flood product from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). This global daily ~250 m resolution product, VCDWD, is generated in EOS-HDF5 (with .h5 extension), with data from VIIRS aboard both the NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 satellites. The final calibration for the NOAA-21 VIIRS surface reflectance product is still under development. In this Beta 1 release, we are using preliminary calibration.
The VIIRS HDF products are listed on NASA's LANCE NRT Global Flood Products page (see VIIRS product details), and available for download from LANCE NRT directories now. The product is expected to be added to Worldview (Floods category) by the end of May, at which time GeoTiff products will also be available.
With the Terra and Aqua satellites expected to be retired in the late 2020s, the VIIRS product was developed to replace the MODIS product (see MODIS product details).
