VIIRS Version 2 Data Land Data Products Released

NASA's Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) announced the upcoming summer 2023 release of NASA Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 2 land data products. The VIIRS Version 2 release will include data products from both the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-20 (NOAA-20) satellite which was previously called Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1). The initial release covers the joint mission period from year 2018 up to the leading edge. This will be followed by a second reprocessing effort covering the Suomi NPP mission period from the beginning of the mission in 2012 through 2017.

The initial release will begin with Surface Reflectance data products followed by the Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity product suite. The VIIRS Earth Science Data Records for Version 2 will include additional data products to provide continuity with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land science products.

Details on product improvements for Version 2 will be provided on the digital object identifier (DOI) landing page for each product. Suomi NPP VIIRS Version 1 data products will remain available for distribution and will continue with forward processing during the transition.
