Description
The Kwajalein Polarimetric S-Band Weather Radar (KPOL) is a dual-polarized Doppler radar system that has been operating continuously since March 2014 in support of NASA’s Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. KPOL provides critical ground validation observations of tropical oceanic precipitation systems in a region where surface-based measurements are extremely sparse. KPOL detects, analyzes, and records precipitating weather systems. It operates in two primary modes: (1) volume scan mode sampling the 3-dimensional precipitation structure within 150 km of Kwajalein, and (2) single-level surveillance scans observing precipitation location within 300 km. The 3-dimensional data obtained from volume scans are processed and analyzed by the GPM Ground Validation (GV) group to produce precipitation products within the data domain at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The GPM GV KPOL dataset is an ongoing dataset. The dataset files are available from January 1, 2014, through April 1, 2026, in netCDF format (Climate and Forecast conventions compliant).
