Description
The Landsat-Derived Global Rainfed-Cropland Product Level 2 2020 (LGRIP30_L2_RAIN) Version 2 data provides high-resolution, 30 meter (m) cropland data to assist and address food and water security issues of the twenty-first century. As an extension of the Global Food Security-support Analysis Data (GFSAD) project, LGRIP_L2_RAIN V2 maps agricultural lands by dividing them into rainfed single croplands and rainfed single croplands mixed with natural vegetation, and calculates applicable cropland areas across the globe. LGRIP data are produced using Landsat 8 time-series satellite sensor data for the 2019 through 2021 time period to create a nominal 2020 product.
Each LGRIP L2 Rainfed 30 m resolution GeoTIFF file contains a layer that identifies areas of rainfed cropland (cropland areas that are purely dependent on direct precipitation without any artificial watering) divided into single crop and single crop that is mixed with natural vegetation, non-rainfed land (irrigated croplands and areas not classified as cropland), and water bodies over a 10° by 10° area, as well as an accuracy assessment of the product. A low-resolution browse image is also included.
Currently, LGRIP30 V2 products only contain data for the conterminous United States (CONUS). LGRIP30 V2 data covering the rest of the globe will be added at a later date.
Improvements/Changes from Previous Version
There are three major goals in developing LGRIP30 V2:
- The goal of LGRIP30 V2 is to overcome uncertainties present in LGRIP30 V1 and increase accuracies and reduce errors of omission and commission, thereby producing the most accurate high-resolution LGRIP30 product for the world. The LGRIP30 V2 is a significantly improved product. For more details see Section 3.1 of the User Guide.
- LGRIP30 V2 is for the nominal year 2020; LGRIP30 V1 was for the nominal year 2015.
- LGRIP30 V2 introduces Level 1 (L1) and Level 2 (L2) products to provide more detail for irrigated areas (IRRI) and rainfed (RAIN) areas. L1 data provides the greatest detail and classification for irrigated (LGRIP30_L1_IRRI) and rainfed (LGRIP30_L1_RAIN) croplands, while L2 data provides aggregated L1 data for irrigated (LGRIP30_L2_IRRI) and rainfed (LGRIP30_L2_RAIN) areas.

Variables
Variables are a set of physical properties whose values determine the characteristics or behavior of something. For example, temperature and pressure are variables of the atmosphere. Parameters and variables can be used interchangeably. Variable level attributes provide individual information for each variable.
The Name in this table is the variable name. Fill value indicates missing or undefined data points in a variable. Valid range is the range of values the variable can store. Scale factor is used to increase or decrease the size of an object and can be used to correct for distortion. For questions on a specific variable, please use the Earthdata Forum.
