Background
NASA's Airborne Data Management Group (ADMG), a Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) solution, was established to enable more efficient, intuitive discovery of and access to NASA's airborne and field Earth science observations. ADMG works closely with NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program, Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project, Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs), and field investigation data collection and science teams to aid in communication and support data transfer. ADMG also helps improve policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure quicker, more effective data archival, availability, and access for users. These efforts have increased the speed and efficiency of data transfer from years to providing data that are accessible within 6-12 months from collection, as evident with the Earth Venture Suborbital (EVS)-3 field investigations, and ADMG is again embedded within the current EVS-4 mission teams to expand on this progress.
Status: Available Now
ADMG is actively completing an inventory of all non-satellite NASA Earth observations. Contextual metadata for over 180 airborne and field campaigns, 120 platforms, 250 instruments, and 2500 associated data products have been added to the ADMG-developed Catalog of Archived Suborbital Earth Science Investigations (CASEI) resource. CASEI provides a public-facing web portal and API access for data discovery, exploration, and query, enabling efficient data discovery and providing a wealth of holistic, connecting details. While continuing to add content for remaining known field campaigns, ADMG also assists ESDIS with early determinations key in the data archival process and directly interacts with science Principal Investigators (PIs) to provide requirements clarification and assistance with data management plans. Continuing efforts are underway for transitioning CASEI’s functionality to ESDIS for more efficient NASA Earth data user experience and streamlined technical resources. ADMG also continues collaborations with scientists and data stewards to streamline data delivery and publication processes amid ESDIS’s ongoing evolution from DAACs toward Science Enabling Teams (SETs) paradigm.
Societal Impact
NASA's ADMG built and currently maintains CASEI, a solution for search, browse, discovery, and the provision of contextual details critical for the re(use) of airborne and field campaign observations collected over a half century; this enables efficient findability, access, and increased scientific return on agency investments in these irreplaceable observations of Earth’s systems and processes. Metadata curation and standardization efforts support advanced re(use) as emerging technologies are leveraged for new analyses..
