Background
The Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG)-2022 assessment found that several agencies would benefit from specialized remote sensing training focused on the specific satellite needs and issues of their agency. This includes improved awareness/training on a number of topics such as the types of available data, how to discover and access data in the cloud or on agency computers, what tools can be used to address satellite needs, what products could be helpful, and how remote sensing can be incorporated into decision-making processes.
Thematic topics may be of interest as well and will be reviewed with agency partners, such as change detection following disasters and sourcing information for environmental resource management are of specific interest (e.g., structure conditions, burnt vegetation, flood/water levels, land subsidence).
Training initiatives such as NASA's Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) offer online and in-person training that cover a wide range of datasets, web portals, and analysis tools and their application to air quality, agriculture, climate, disasters, land, and water resources management. Some of the requested training needs extend beyond what’s currently available, so training development opportunities are being further discussed and explored with ARSET and other capacity-building initiatives.
Status: In Development
NASA’s SNWG Implementation TEam (NSITE) has met with NASA’s ARSET team and other training programs to identify existing trainings that may benefit agencies. NSITE plans to deliver these identified trainings to agency representatives and host a listening session to understand what gaps still exist. Following this discussion, NSITE will work with ARSET and other capacity-building programs to develop trainings targeted towards the agency’s specific needs.
Societal Impact
Training helps ensure that NASA's wealth of available satellite Earth observations can be properly understood and applied to agencies' decision-making processes, thus increasing the use and impact of NASA data.
