Oil Storage Facility Fire in Cuba

Image captured on 8 August 2022 by the MODIS instrument aboard the Terra satellite.

The embedded map shows a false-color corrected reflectance image of black smoke emanating from an oil storage facility near Matanzas, Cuba, from 8 August 2022. This image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite. One of the eight oil storage tanks at the facility was struck by lightning on 5 August 2022. A second tank caught on fire on 6 August, which subsequently spread to a third and fourth tank by 8 August 2022. In the image, black smoke can be seen reaching Havana, which is almost 80 km/50 miles to the west.
