In collaboration with the Amazon Web Service (AWS) Public Dataset Program, NASA has made the following datasets available in Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) format for the COVID-19 Space Apps Challenge.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and NASA have a Space Act Agreement to explore best practices around discovery, access, and use of high-value NASA science datasets. Making analytics-optimized data stores available to the science community will minimize the need for data wrangling and preprocessing within the community, leading to a faster time to insight and quicker innovation. We are leveraging this Space Act Agreement to make these products freely available.
The datasets were validated by the respective science experts at NASA's Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs).
Available Datasets
OMI/Aura NO2 Cloud-Screened Tropospheric Column Global Gridded 0.25 degree x 0.25 degree in Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF
NO2 tropospheric column density, screened for CloudFraction < 30% global daily composite at 0.25 degree resolution for the temporal range January 2004 to May 2020. Original OMI/Aura NO2 archive data in HDF5 has been processed into a Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) format.

MODIS/Terra+Aqua MAIAC Land Aerosol Optical Depth Daily L2G 1 km SIN Grid in Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF (COG)
0.47 μm and 0.55 μm Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) over land in Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) format, generated from the MCD19A2 Version 6 data product. MCD19A2 is a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra and Aqua combined Multi-angle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) Land Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) gridded Level 2 product produced daily at 1 kilometer (km) pixel resolution (source: MCD19A2 v006).
Satellite measurements of aerosols, called aerosol optical depth, are based on the fact that the particles change the way the atmosphere reflects and absorbs visible and infrared light. An optical thickness of less than 0.1 (palest yellow) indicates a crystal clear sky with maximum visibility, whereas a value of 1 (reddish brown) indicates very hazy conditions.
