Version 1.4 of the Satellite Cloud and Radiation Property retrieval System (SatCORPS) Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) Geostationary Satellite (GEO) Edition 4 are now available. These datasets, hosted by NASA's Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC), provide critical cloud and Earth energy data for climate research.

The data for these collections were collected over the Northern Hemisphere (NH) and the Southern Hemisphere (SH) from the following platforms:

  • The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) using the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on GOES-16, GOES-17, GOES-18, and GOES-19. These observations were at a 2 km resolution at nadir and were sub-sampled to 6 km that took every third line and pixel. GOES-15 used the GOES-15 Imager where the observations were at a 4 km resolution at nadir and were sub-sampled at 8 km that took every other line and pixel.
  • The Himawari Geostationary Satellites (Himawari-8 and Himawari-9) using the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI). These observations were at a 2 km resolution at nadir and were sub-sampled to 6 km that took every third line and pixel.
  • The Meteosat Geostationary Satellites (Meteosat-8 to Meteosat-11) using the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) instrument. These observations were at a 3 km resolution at nadir and were sub-sampled to 6 km that took every other line and pixel.

Technical Details

All datasets are arranged as files for each hour in netCDF-4 format while using the Langley Research Center (LaRC) SATCORPS algorithms supporting the CERES project. The version 1.4 uses the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis for atmospheric input; Version 1.2 used GMAO's GEOS-5.4.1. No changes have been made to the cloud retrieval algorithm.
