Delivery of Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite data products will cease on November 1, 2026. Data users should transition now to alternative products from NOAA-21 and NOAA-20.Suomi NPP data announcement

Description
The OMPS-NPP L2 LP Aerosol Extinction Vertical Profile swath daily 3slit (AER) product contains the retrieved aerosol extinction coefficients measured by the Ozone Mapping and Profiling Suite (OMPS) Limb-Profiler (LP) sensor on the Suomi-NPP satellite. The AER product measures stratospheric aerosol abundance and evolution at 6 wavelengths (510, 600, 675, 745, 869 and 997 nm) to complement the OMPS LP measurements of stratospheric and mesospheric profile ozone. This product replaces the previous single wavelength 675 nm (AER675) product.
Each granule contains data from the daylight portion of each orbit measured for a full day. Spatial coverage is global (-90 to 90 degrees latitude), and there are about 14.5 orbits per day each measuring three limb profiles spaced approximately 250 km in the cross-track direction. The profiles are measured from the ground up to about 80 km with a vertical resolution of the retrieved profiles of approximately 1.8 km.
The files are written using the Hierarchical Data Format Version 5 or HDF5.
Version Description
Version 2.1 is the current version of this data product, and supersedes all previous versions. Please see the README document for detailed description and differences for this and previous versions.
Version 2 - doi:10.5067/CX2B9NW6FI27
v2.1 released 2022-05-18 - Data Coverage 2012/02/07 to current
v2.0 released 2020-07-15 - Data Coverage: 2012/02/07 to 2022/05/18
Version 1.5 doi:10.5067/GZJJYA7L0YW2 - released 21 Feb 2019 - Data coverage: 2012/02/07 to 2020/07/15.
The particle size distribution used in the retrieval algorithm has been revised to follow model simulations that closely reproduce long-term balloon measurements, which reduces the error in the retrieved extinction profiles. The aerosol extinction coefficient data quality compares well with concurrent measurements from the SAGE III instrument on the International Space Station during 2017.
Version 1 - doi:10.5067/2CB3QR9SMA3F - released 31 Jan 2017 - Data coverage: 2012/02/07 to 2019/02/08.
First public release of this data product.
