The interferometer aboard the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) platform uses microwave technology to provide extremely precise measurements of the distance between GRACE's twin satellites. These measurements are then used to derive detailed estimations of Earth's gravity field, which are useful in tracking Earth's water movement around the globe, including underground water storage, the amount of water in large lakes and rivers, soil moisture, ice sheets and glaciers, and sea level.
