Space Shuttle Challenger launched on April 29, 1985, for a seven day mission designated as STS-51B. It was the first mission for which the acquisition of science data was the primary objective.
The payload included the Spacelab 3 multidisciplinary mission, which emphasized investigations requiring the low-gravity environment of Earth orbit. The investigations selected for the Spacelab 3 mission originated in the United States, France, and India, and represented a total of five different disciplinesL material science, life sciences, fluid mechanics, atmospheric science, and astronomy. Spacelab 3 included the first flight of the Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy (ATMOS) experiment.
