Hyperspectral Thermal Emission Spectrometer Facility Instrument

The Hyperspectral Thermal Emissions Spectrometer (HyTES) facility project manages the lifecycle of data derived from the HyTES airborne imaging spectrometer. The instument collects high spatial and spectral resolution measurements of brightness temperature, emissivity, and land surface temperatures.

Data from HyTES are useful for a number of applications, including high-resolution surface temperature and emissivity measurements, detection of trace gases such as methane, and volcano observations.

HyTES operates with 256 spectral channels in the thermal infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum between 7.5 and 12 micrometers, and it incorporates several technologies, including a Dyson spectrometer. 

Since its first flights in July 2012, the HyTES spectrometer has been deployed on NASA’s Twin Otter, ER-2, and GulfStream V aircraft.
