Description
SST provides global sea surface temperature derived primarily from thermal infrared observations during daytime. Users apply SST to detect fronts and eddies, monitor marine heatwaves, drive ecosystem and habitat models (when paired with chlor_a, Kd_490, PAR), and provide boundary conditions for biogeochemical and climate analyses. Note that IR-based SST is sensitive to clouds, aerosols, and diurnal warming; for minimum diurnal effects, pair with NSST (nighttime SST) and refer to per-file flags before analysis.
Geophysical variables in this suite include:
• bias_sst — Sea Surface Temperature bias (°C)
• flags_sst — Product-specific flags, Sea Surface Temperature (integer bitmask)
• l2_flags — Level-2 Processing Flags (integer bitmask; see bit definitions)
• qual_sst — Quality levels for Sea Surface Temperature (integer quality flag)
• sst — Sea Surface Temperature (°C)
• sstref — Sea Surface Temperature reference (°C)
• stdv_sst — Sea Surface Temperature standard deviation (°C)

Variables
The table below lists the variables contained within a single granule for this dataset. Variables often contain observed or derived geophysical measurements collected from a variety of sources, including remote sensing instruments on satellite and airborne platforms, field campaigns, in situ measurements, and model outputs. The terms variable, parameter, scientific data set, layer, and band have been used across NASA’s Earth science disciplines; however, variable is the designated nomenclature in NASA’s Common Metadata Repository (CMR). Variable metadata attributes such as Name, Description, Units, Data Type, Fill Value, Valid Range, and Scale Factor allow users to efficiently process and analyze the data. The full range of attributes may not be applicable to all variables. Additional information on variable attributes is typically available in the data, user guide, and/or other product documentation.
For questions on a specific variable, please use the Earthdata Forum.
