NASA's Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) instrument was successfully installed on the International Space Station (ISS) and has provided its first view of the Earth. According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the milestone, called "first light," took place at 7:51 p.m. PDT (10:51 p.m. EDT) on July 27, 2022, as the ISS passed over Western Australia. EMIT will help scientists better understand the mineral dust composition of the Earth and how dust affects climate heating and cooling. We are in the process of migrating all NASA Earth science data sites into Earthdata from now until end of 2026. Not all NASA Earth science data and resources will appear here until then. Thank you for your patience as we make this transition.
