Nimbus 6 (or Nimbus-F) was a meteorological satellite launched by NASA into a Sun-synchronous near-polar orbit on June 12, 1975. It was the sixth in a series of second-generation meteorological satellites in the Nimbus program.
Nimbus 6 was designed to serve as a stabilized, Earth-oriented platform for the testing of advanced meteorological sensors and the collection of meteorological data on a global scale. The spacecraft carried the following experiments to accomplish this:
- Earth Radiation Budget (ERB)
- Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR)
- High-Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS)
- Limb Radiance Inversion Radiometer (LRIR)
- Pressure Modulated Radiometer (PMR)
- Scanning Microwave Spectrometer (SCAMS)
- Temperature-Humidity Infrared Radiometer (THIR)
- Tracking and Data Relay Experiment (T+DRE)
- Tropical Wind Energy Conversion and Reference Level Experiment (TWERLE)
The spacecraft operated successfully until March 29, 1983, when it was decommissioned.
