The United Arab Emirates Unified Aerosol Experiment (UAE2) field campaign focused on the country's coastal and desert areas to gain insight on the properties and concentrations of aerosols and to understand how these aerosols might affect climate. More than 20 international research organizations participated in the field campaign which occurred August through October 2004.

NASA's Atmospheric Sciences Data Center (ASDC) and Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) teams collaborated to provide special data products and images in an innovative approach.

Aerosol and meteorological measurements were provided by a network of instruments on land, buoys, and ships, by airborne in situ and remote instruments, and by satellite retrievals. The Surface-sensing Measurements for Atmospheric Radiative Transfer (SMART)—a suite of ground-based remote sensing instruments to investigate atmospheric solar and terrestrial radiation—was the chief land based instrument package.

MISR's role in UAE2 was to provide satellite retrievals of aerosols, cloud and surface properties, and imagery after data acquisition.
