FIRMS Releases New Features to Identify Active Fires by Type

Users of NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) can now differentiate between fires caused by burning vegetation and fires from natural heat sources or industrial heat sources.

Methane emissions detected by GHGSAT over the volcano Mount Fentale, Ethiopia on January 31, 2025 at 07:59:33 UTC. The image shows a Mapbox basemap satellite image of the volcano with the GHGSAT-detected emissions data superimposed on top. A rainbow colour ramp for the plumes shows the enhancement of methane above local background levels in parts per billion, with dark blue as low and bright red as high. The emission rate is estimated to be 58 metric tonnes per hour.
