LANCE Data Access and Tools
NASA's Land, Atmosphere Near real-time Capability for Earth observation (LANCE) provides Earth imagery within 3 hours of satellite observation. Its MODIS and VIIRS Near Real Time (NRT) production operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across redundant systems to keep downtime under 1%. The system pulls L0 files from the EOS Data and Operations System (EDOS) within 10–30 minutes of real time, relaxing some ancillary data rules to meet the 3-hour processing target. To differentiate them from standard products, L1, L2, and L3 NRT files feature DOI metadata and include "NRT" in their filenames. All data is directly accessible via NRT HTTPS sites from a 7-day rolling archive.
