Dust Storm over Iraq

Image captured on May 16, 2022 by the MODIS instrument aboard the Aqua satellite.

MODIS data image of a dust storm over Iraq, May 16, 2022.

True-color corrected reflectance image of a large dust storm over Iraq, on May 16, 2022. This image was acquired by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite. Another large dust storm also occurred on May 5, 2022, and the increasing frequency of dust storms in recent years appear to be fueled by record-low rainfall, drought, and desertification.
