Worldview Image of the Week

Dust Storm over Iraq

Image captured on 16 May 2022 by the MODIS instrument aboard the Aqua satellite.

True-color corrected reflectance image of a large dust storm over Iraq, on 16 May 2022. This image was acquired by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradometer (MODIS), aboard the Aqua satellite. Another large dust storm also occurred on 5 May 2022 and the increasing frequency of dust storms in recent years appear to be fueled by record-low rainfall, drought, and desertification.

The embedded map above shows the dust score layer overlaid on the true-color corrected reflectance image of the dust storm over Iraq. Dust Score was acquired by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), aboard the Aqua satellite.
